Kaci Hickox: Ebola’s Sandra Fluke

Originally posted at American Thinkerindex

Two perfect examples of bleeding hearts choosing a cause and then demanding that the cost be exacted from the hides of others are two liberal women who have made national news despite caring little about the expense of their personal wants.

The first woman is Sandra Kay Fluke (pronounced fluck), an attorney and women’s rights activist who, in her last year of Georgetown University Law School, used polycystic ovary disease as a rationale to denounce the Catholic university’s refusal to comply with an Obamacare insurance mandate to provide women with free contraception and abortion.

Fluke was unabashed in her demands, citing $3,000 in birth control expenses as one of the reasons Americans should be forced to finance contraception for women who feel others should fund their sex lives.

After well-deserved criticism and much controversy, with the help of Democrat handlers, Sandra became the left’s spokeswoman in the fabricated “war on women” and was elevated to the status of patron saint of polycystic ovary disease awareness.  The epitome of liberal activism, Ms. Fluke made it quite clear that her desire for free birth control took precedence over the religious convictions of those she felt should be forced to foot the bill for her contraceptives.

In other words, Sandra Fluke was unwilling to sacrifice her own money, yet she had zero compunction about citing polycystic ovary disease as a way to force others to absorb the cost of her birth control pills.

In order to raise awareness about the “war on women,” Sandra was more than willing to  wage all-out war on religious liberty and oppress anyone who disagreed with her personal views.

Now we have Sierra Leone Ebola nurse Kaci Hickox.  While defying quarantine requirements instituted by the state of New Jersey and the CDC in her home state of Maine, Kaci, who seems unconcerned about the welfare of her friends and neighbors, was concerned enough about herself to don a bicycle helmet while out cycling with boyfriend Ted Wilbur.

In West Africa, Kaci was concerned about West Africans, but back home in America, Kaci is more concerned about Kaci than the safety of those she could expose to a fatal hemorrhagic fever.  So, unlike Sandra Fluke, Kaci Hickox’s message does not involve the “war on women”; rather, it focuses on the futility of a mandatory “self-quarantine” even though it is now being reported that her roommate in Africa is infected with Ebola.

Kaci Hickox cared so much for West African Ebola patients that she was willing to risk her life.  However, once home in the U.S., when asked to inconvenience herself for 21 days by participating in a cautionary self-quarantine, self-sacrificial Kaci refuses to comply.

Leaving aside arguments about the dangers and ramifications of asking a free people to submit to government-mandated quarantines, or whether the Ebola crisis is fabricated or not, there is a huge measure of hypocrisy that needs to be pointed out on Kaci Hickox’s part that is typical liberal modus operandi.

Liberals like Kaci love for government oversight to be enforced on everyone else, but when government tries to dictate something they would rather not do, like pay for their own contraceptives or stay indoors for 21 days, liberals cry the loudest.

Then, in a stunning example of stupidity trumping science, in a statement that encapsulates the negative impact that moral relevancy has had on America, Kaci’s boyfriend Ted said, “We don’t believe that we can get anyone sick.”  That’s because in Obama’s America, a regime Kaci and Ted both proudly identify with, declaring one’s belief places that belief on par with the truth, even if it’s false.

That’s why just like Sandra Fluke, Kaci Hickox may portray herself as altruistic, but as it turns out, her type of progressive philanthropy comes with a price.  Because when Kaci’s hypocrisy is factored into the equation, just like Sandra Fluke, she embodies the high cost of liberal double standards.

Ebola Hugs and Other Peculiar Happenings

As the Ebola crisis continues to swirl and the ineptitude of America’s president continues to be laid bare, certain oddities surrounding the situation are impossible to ignore.

For instance, why, after being administered the experimental drug Z-Mapp, did it take Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol almost 30 days to recover from Ebola? Since Dr. Brantly’s recovery, other American healthcare workers, as well as freelance photojournalist Ashoka Mukpo, have contracted and then recuperated from the virus with lightning speed.

Meanwhile, the hale and hearty relatives of “patient zero,” Thomas Eric Duncan, who brought Ebola to Dallas via Liberia and subsequently succumbed to the sickness, despite having been fully exposed to Duncan’s virus-infected body fluids, emerged miraculously unscathed from a 21-day quarantine.

For some mysterious reason protective gear did not shield nurses who cared for the dying man in isolation, but Duncan’s family, who lived with him in a small, hot apartment where he vomited and lost control of his bowels, have all been issued a clean bill of health.

Adding color to the drama, now, one week prior to a midterm election that stands to handily trounce Barack Obama’s party, the president recreated his old Chris Christie-Hurricane Sandy bear-hug stunt. This time Obama has resorted to embracing an American Ebola victim who, after leaving the hospital, headed straight for the Oval Office to meet with the fellow responsible for her contracting the hemorrhagic fever in the first place.

The woman who did this is 26-year-old nurse Nina Pham. Nina is the Dallas Ebola survivor who, immediately following her release from isolation at the National Institutes of Health, hugged the miracle worker who astonished everyone when he got Gabby Giffords to open her eyes for the first time after her almost-fatal head wound in the Tucson, Arizona shooting.

The most recent visit was similar to the one where a feeble Kent Brantly rose from his sick bed and swiftly made his way to the Oval Office to meet with America’s Obamacare creator. Once there, Dr. Brantly beseeched boots on the ground in West Africa — boots that Obama refuses to send to Syria to fight a marauding band of ISIS fighters happily going about the business of beheading Americans.

After Nina Pham’s recovery, Barack Obama — who treats Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu as if he’s the one with end-stage Ebola — free of concern about contracting the virus, with minimal screening and full faith in America’s healthcare system, emulated Bill Clinton and leaned in for a face-to-face bear hug from a young nurse whose White House ensemble did not include a beret.

The message the president was undoubtedly hoping the visit would send to America was this: although medical personnel in full protective gear contracted Ebola and irresponsible doctors like Craig Spencer rode NYC subways and went E-bowling with a fever, the disease is not a danger to everyday Americans walking New York City’s High Line park, even if the guy strolling in front of them is coughing out Ebola-infested droplets from his diseased lungs.

Speaking of messages, by getting together with the man whose reckless plan to leave the borders open and insistence on continuing to grant travel visas to West Africans caused her to get Ebola, Nina Pham behaved sort of like the victim of a hit-and-run accident seeking out the driver at fault to go for a Sunday drive.

Actually, by meeting with the president, Pham probably did more harm than good.

The nurse squandered a perfect opportunity to condemn Obama’s refusal to do his job and protect American citizens. Quite frankly, as a type of public servant it was Nina’s duty to insist Obama close the border so that travelers like the late Thomas Eric Duncan would be barred from exposing health care workers to unnecessary risks.

Instead of speaking on behalf of an anxious nation, Pham pulled a Chris Christie and rushed to the White House to provide the president a pre-election day photo op by all but slow dancing with the man who hacked off her feet.

Asked whether there was any concern about putting the president so close to someone only recently recovered from Ebola, White House press secretary Josh ‘Not So’ Earnest shrugged that the president “[w]as not at all concerned about any risk that would be associated with him showing his gratitude… by hugging her.”

Isn’t it odd for Obama to want to “show gratitude” to a woman for surviving a deadly disease she contracted because he simply refuses to do his job?

Nonetheless, a sufferer of the president’s policies smiling and hugging the perpetrator of her pain is a perfect example of how well-meaning people repeatedly assist the world’s most renowned opportunistic user in his ongoing effort to ‘let no crisis go to waste.’ This is especially true since the guy Nina Pham clasped to her breast has made it quite clear that politics take precedence over the wellbeing of the people who came dangerously close to being sacrificial lambs on the altar where Obama currently ‘shares the health.’

Adding insult to injury, as part of the ruse, omitting only a canary yellow HAZMAT suit and a full-face protective mask the president recently upped the deception quotient by visiting a specialized Ebola treatment center at Emory University in Georgia.

Reminiscing about his momentous visit our intrepid president had this to say:

I want to use myself as an example just so that people have a sense of the science here. I shook hands with, hugged, and kissed, not the doctors, but a couple of the nurses at Emory because of the valiant work that they did in treating one of the patients. They followed the protocols. They knew what they were doing. And I felt perfectly safe doing so.

And so, despite the many recovery-related peculiarities and notwithstanding the soiled sheets and missed opportunities for Nina Pham to speak on behalf of those without a voice, even the Ebola epidemic has become about a man who uses hugs to convey reassuring messages to a nation victimized by his stupidity.

RESCUED! NOW A RESCUER: Kent Brantly’s True Calling

ebola-medico-1-300x180Originally posted at Clash Daily

Jesus promised the faithful in Matt 10:39 that “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” In August I wrote an article entitled “Kent Brantly Lives the Gospel from a Sick Bed. “ In the piece I said I believed that Dr. Brantly, who contracted Ebola while serving as a medical missionary for Samaritan’s Purse in Liberia, would survive the virus because of his selfless, Christ-like attitude towards serving the sick and dying.

After being given a blood transfusion from a youthful Liberian Ebola survivor that Brantly had helped care for and receiving a dose of the experimental drug Z-Mapp, and after being flown from West Africa to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for treatment, miraculously Kent Brantly did survive a virus that has been known to kill 90% of its victims.

At the time there were some who reacted to my praising Brantly with mockery. The gist of what was being said was that if God helped heal Brantly, why did God let His follower get Ebola in the first place?

I think we now have the answer to that question.

Since returning from West Africa and rising from his sick bed healed and whole, Kent Brantly is being used by God to provide blood transfusions to Americans who’ve been stricken by the Ebola virus.

If Kent Brantly had never gotten and survived Ebola, his blood would not have the antibodies needed by those who might otherwise succumb to the disease.

Thus far, Brantly’s blood has been transfused into Dr. Nick Sacra, who also contracted Ebola during his work in West Africa and survived the disease. Also receiving Dr. Brantly’s blood are NBC freelance cameraman Ashoka Mukpoand and most recently Nina Pham, the 26-year-old Dallas nurse who contracted the virus while caring for “patient zero”, Thomas Eric Duncan.

Unfortunately for Duncan, Brantly offered his blood but the two men’s blood type was not a match. That’s why the Liberian Ebola patient who brought the virus to America, despite receiving topnotch care, subsequently died at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital where Nurse Nina Pham is now in isolation.

Now we come to find out that the critical care nurse, like Kent Brantly, is also a follower of Jesus Christ, and that her Bible teacher Tom Ha said, “I expect, with the big heart she has, she went beyond what she was supposed to do to help anyone in need.”

So, in what could be a tragic situation, God has provided a faith-building story that hushes the scoffers and reveals God’s power and purpose in the midst of catastrophe.
Little did Brantly know at the time that Liberia would not be the place where his blood would be poured out to save the lives of many.

Instead, it would be here at home, where the virus he survived would become the antidote that would save American lives. And exponentially, for each survivor more blood will be available to save others falling victim to the deadly pathogen that has crossed the ocean with the intent to wreak havoc, death and destruction.

When Kent Brantly was released from Emory he called it a “miraculous day” and then went on to say:

I cannot thank you enough for your prayers and your support. But what I can tell you is that I serve a faithful God who answers prayers.

Through the care of the Samaritan’s Purse and…missionary team in Liberia, the use of an experimental drug, and the expertise and resources of the health care team at Emory University Hospital, God saved my life.

For all those people who ridiculed Kent Brantly’s gratefulness and thanksgiving for God’s healing by snidely asking, “Why, if God loves Kent Brantly so much, did he allow His servant to get Ebola in the first place,” the answer is found in Genesis 50:20 which says, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

Kent Brantly’s blood has now been given to three victims of a disease that never should have been in America in the first place.

In 1 Peter 2:24 the Apostle says, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” Hence, God is using the blood of a man who “died to sin and lives for righteousness” to bring Christ’s healing to the wound called Ebola.

Ebola is Making its Way Across the Open Border

ebola-virusOriginally posted at Truth be Told Media

America is debating whether or not incoming flights from Ebola-stricken West Africa should be halted. Yet the Southern Border remains open. The president’s philosophy must be to keep the doors open, which, when it comes to deterring an intruder, accomplishes absolutely nothing.

It’s already quite clear, although the CDC and the Obama administration refuse to admit it, that Enterovirus 68, a respiratory virus that requires some children be intubated and has already killed two small children and three adults, came over the border from Latin America.

We also know that our Border Patrol agents have contracted bacterial pneumonia, scabies, and TB from the thousands of unaccompanied minors, MS13 thugs, and other culturally diverse individuals that range from Chinese gang members to Islamic terrorists.

So the discussion continues as an administration that can’t seem to tie its own shoes attempts to reassure a skittish nation that they’re equipped to handle hemorrhagic Ebola.

Clearly the government is not only unequipped, it’s inept, ignorant, and playing with all our lives.

Now, despite the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issuing warnings for U.S. citizens to avoid travel to West African countries, and notwithstanding the fact that at every airport, all day every day, individuals with visas traveling to the US from West Africa continue to arrive, the news, although not surprising, has just gotten worse.

According to Chris Cabrera of the National Border Patrol Council, West African illegals are crossing the Southern Border, and “[n]ot too long ago [they] did catch some people… from Liberia.”

Seeing as wisdom is lacking, maybe some basic math skills are in order.

What we already know is that a person can be exposed to Ebola in West Africa. Then, thanks to our open borders, that same person has 7-21 days to make their way to the Southern Border of America. If that person happens to be in upper end of the 21-day limit and has no symptoms, they can mingle in stash houses with other immigrants without infecting them.

Individuals with Ebola bubbling up inside them will be processed by Border Agents, sent to a family somewhere in America, and a few days or weeks later may be found somewhere puking a hemorrhagic virus all over otherwise healthy people.

In fact, in 2013 the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that Border Patrol agents detained 112 illegal immigrants from Guinea, 231 from Liberia, and 145 from Sierra Leone. Those numbers add up to a potential 488 Thomas Eric Duncans running around hacking and spewing all over everyone and everything.

Speaking from a place of sanity, Cabrera expressed the opinion that “We need to be more pro-active about trying to prevent it from coming in as opposed to trying to contain it once it’s here.” Ya’ think?

CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden disagrees. Frieden feels that closing the border or stopping incoming flights from West Africa will make the situation worse by preventing medical workers from traveling to Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone and returning home. Why medical teams can’t be given exclusive clearance remains a mystery.

Nevertheless, apparently the administration’s view on the potential pandemic is that the virus can only be stopped at the source. In other words, arsonists are being allowed to set fires all over America, and all Barack Obama and the CDC are focused on matchbooks.

So besides being patted down, arriving visitors at airports are now having their temperature taken by the TSA, which, based on some of the more intrusive pat downs, is a scary thought. Meanwhile, our borders remain wide open and people who may be infected but have not yet presented with symptoms, are being waved right on through.

Amnesty for Ebola

UnknownOriginally posted at American Thinker

Recently, Time magazine published an article entitled “Ebola Just the Latest Hardship for Liberian Patient in the U.S.” The piece seemed to be written with the intent to elicit sympathy for a man who, in his quest to survive, illegally infiltrated a nation carrying a highly contagious hemorrhagic virus.

But then again, it’s really not entirely Thomas Eric Duncan’s fault. After all, Barack Obama has been broadcasting the message to the world that even if our Border Agents contract bacterial pneumonia and our schoolchildren are paralyzed and placed on breathing tubes, granting sick illegals access to America takes precedence over the safety and well-being of the people he vowed to protect.

Think of it! America may be on the precipice of a pandemic that could kill 50% of the world’s population and Barack Obama decides now is the time to announce that he’s clearing the way for refugee status visas for 70,000 more people, many of whom will undoubtedly be infected with viruses and pathogens foreign to American soil.

In Third World countries, rushing to America in time for amnesty is all the rage right now. If Time magazine is correct, Duncan was apparently planning to meet up with an illegal family already here.

Jay Newton-Small, the author of the Time article, says:

For Thomas Eric Duncan, the visa to visit his family in the United States was a golden reprieve: a chance to escape the poverty and sickness surrounding him in the Liberian capital of Monrovia… and a chance, maybe, to stay on and build a better, safer life.

Attempting to portray Duncan as a Good Samaritan, Small writes that, according to the New York Times, Duncan caught Ebola:

[h]elping carry a heavily pregnant neighbor back from the hospital where she was turned away from the overflowing Ebola ward. The 19-year-old girl died that night, early on Sept. 16. Her 21-year-old brother, who also helped carry her, died a week later in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Although touching, for some reason, immediately following his good deed Duncan decided to come to the U.S., so he lied on a Liberian exit form by denying that he had had contact with Ebola. Then the humanitarian do-gooder climbed aboard a United Airlines flight and after a few stops ended up in Dallas, Texas, where he proceeded to infect upwards of 100 people, including school-age children.

Thus far, Barack Obama, who scared the wits out of America in October 2009 over the H1N1 flu, has not uttered one word about Duncan’s escapades or acknowledged that the Enterovirus 68, which is endemic to Latin America, may be at the root of an outbreak here that has taken the life of a 10-year-old Providence, Rhode Island girl as well as three adults.

Meanwhile, clownish Obama administration representatives attempt to quell public fears by reassuring the nation that the same government that can’t find Lois Lerner’s emails is fully equipped to track down and corral anyone who came in contact with Thomas Eric Duncan.

As for Mr. Duncan, the virus is out of the bag, so to speak. Still, the Liberian government — which refuses to discontinue flights out of Liberia — and the Dallas district attorney are both threatening to prosecute Mr. Duncan for endangering the lives of so many people, including hospital staff who sent him home with antibiotics a few days before he was diagnosed with Ebola and quarantined.

Meanwhile, questions remain as to how a poverty-stricken, unemployed war refugee obtained a visa so quickly, and what kind of visa he actually possessed.

Soon after a visit from his sister, on September 4th “Eric” abruptly quit his job as a driver for Safeway Cargo, the Liberian customs clearance agent for FedEx.  That’s why it’s pretty clear that sister Mai Wureh, a nurse from Charlotte, N.C., convinced her frightened brother that the time was right to come to America, and provided him the money he needed for the voyage.

Why die in a puddle of your own blood and vomit outside a tin shack/hospital in Monrovia when the United States will take you in and provide for all your needs, including giving you a whole ward in a hospital in Dallas, Texas?

So, Thomas Eric Duncan signed on to the Obama Amnesty Plan.  The OAP exclusive package is compliments of the president and features illegal immigrants — sick, healthy, whatever — being waved, beckoned, flown, or bused across the border and are then matched up with family members just in time for amnesty.

Never mind the threat to 300 million people. If Thomas Eric Duncan somehow manages to survive, which looks iffy right now, despite his bringing Ebola into the U.S., Barack Obama has promised the Liberian refugee that ‘No Force On Earth’ will stop him from becoming an American citizen.

Dr. Kent Brantly Lives the Gospel from a Sick Bed

ebola-2-600Originally posted at American Thinker

Quietly and without fanfare or demand for attention, Dr. Kent Brantly, a young doctor from Fort Worth, Texas, was doing missionary work in Liberia with evangelist Billy Graham’s family-founded charity Samaritan’s Purse when he contracted the merciless hemorrhagic Ebola virus, which kills 50-90% of those unfortunate enough to contract it.

By going to West Africa to care for the sick and dying, the husband and father of two small children demonstrated true heroism, and through his service to others, the Christ-like charity that Barack Obama is always pontificating about but never seems to practice.

Because of his decision to serve “the least of these,” Brantly lived out the Scripture verse where Jesus said in John 15: 13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Little did Dr. Brantly know that when he committed himself to minister to Ebola patients, he would be literally laying down his life.

Despite wearing gloves, gowns, and face visors to prevent contact between patients’ bodily fluids and caretakers’ mucous membranes such as the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears, somehow the doctor and his colleague Nancy Writebol, an American aid worker for SIM U.S.A., both contracted the deadly virus.

After coming down with fever, headache, and abdominal pain, the two Americans were diagnosed with Ebola virus and placed in a medical isolation unit on the outskirts of Liberia’s capital.

The only treatment the doctor received came from a 14-year-old boy who was treated by Brantly for Ebola and miraculously recovered.  The young boy’s family was so grateful their child’s life was saved that in an effort to shore up his immune system with the antibodies of someone who survived the virus, they offered the boy’s blood to be transfused into Brantly.

In addition to the blood transfusion, an experimental treatment was offered to Brantly, but because there were only one, not two doses, the selfless doctor again laid down his life and insisted the serum be given to 60-year-old Writebol.

Unfortunately, after foregoing the serum, that very night the doctor’s condition took a turn for the worse.

Currently, the nation is short on true heroism and big on false bravado.  Leaders lack sincere conviction, and have hollow hearts that are far removed from the Scripture verses they quote merely for political expediency and advancement of their own agenda.

As a result, there is an intrinsic hunger in the hearts of many for someone who embodies a higher standard – an individual who actually practices what they preach and doesn’t just talk about sacrifice, sharing, and caring for the less fortunate.  Dr. Brantly is that person, because his self-sacrifice epitomizes what authentic Christ-like discipleship is all about.

While politicians justify self-gratification and fund procedures that assist recklessness in the abnegation of responsibility, a young man, in obedience to Jesus’s command, was willing to die so that another person might live. And with that decision, without speaking one word Dr. Kent Brantly, who prayed that God would spare his life, showed a lost and struggling world the personhood of Jesus and what it means to be a follower of Christ.

Now, after being flown to Georgia to be treated by infectious disease specialists at Emory University Hospital and after taking a turn for the worse, with help, like Lazarus, Dr. Brantly actually stood up and walked from the ambulance into the hospital.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, said, “It’s encouraging that he seems to be improving – that’s really important – and we’re hoping he’ll continue to improve.”

Although statistically the odds of survival were originally against Kent Brantly, doctors are “guardedly optimistic” that he will continue to improve.

Brantly is defying a virus that kills almost everyone who contracts it and reports are that he continues to get stronger, and here’s why: so that someone else could live, Brantly had forfeited that one dose of lifesaving serum in Liberia that was intended for him.

Now the good doctor’s prayers are being answered, and in all probability he will survive the often-fatal disease, but not because of Emory University Hospital, proper hydration, blood transfusions, dialysis, the dose of the serum he finally received, or breathing with the help of a respirator.  Kent Brantly’s life will be spared because Jesus promised the faithful in Matt 10:39 that “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

Update: Apparently, after refusing the dose, Dr. Brantly asked for the dose because he could not breathe.

2nd Update:  Nancy Writebol received a third dose.
